With a wealth of opportunities for hiking trips and walks in the invigorating mountain air, Macugnaga and the Anzasca Valley are ideal for anyone looking for an active holiday. The itineraries available range from easy walks to demanding climbs for expert mountaineers. An easy route leads right from the centre of Macugnaga into the Quarazza valley with its pretty Lago delle Fate (Fairy Lake).
Again, starting from Macugnaga you can explore the wealth of high pasture hamlets built in the distant past by the Walser people, and see the Monte Rosa animal nature park. This is an extensive protected area going from the Belvedere glacier to the peaks of the massif, inhabited by ibex, chamois, eagles and ptarmigan, as well as a rich variety of Alpine flowers.
The most energetic hikers can try routes to various altitude levels, to the Zamboni Zappa hut, the Sella hut, Alpe Cicerwald or Alpe Lavanchetto; more demanding itineraries are to Pizzo Nero, Pizzo Bianco, or the classic Tour of Monte Rosa.
There are ample opportunities for mountain bikers to tour the old villages, or the little towns of the valley, or for the most enterprising, itineraries of several days to explore the whole of the Ossola region. And there’s more: free flying, rafting, canyoning, and rock-climbing, as well as classic sports like tennis and horseback riding.
